Knowing When to Change Career Paths

Sarah began her journey at PS as a customer experience and innovation manager, focused on analyzing customer journeys; but she soon found a stronger interest in working more closely with project teams to shape products. Learn how she made this career transition happen.

In her first role at Publicis Sapient, on our Experience team , Sarah focused on analyzing customer journeys and exploring new business opportunities through data and market insights. While the role allowed her to apply her data analytics background, she realized she had a stronger inclination towards product delivery than user research and customer experience strategy.

“The Experience team is kind of like scientists. They do a lot of research and are really good with a lot of methodology. I just discovered that this was not my thing. I prefer to be on the ground, close to the people who create the product.”

Sarah's desire to work more closely with project teams and shape products led her to explore our Product Management and Agile Program Management team

“When I joined PS, I didn’t expect to have this realization, this ‘Oh, maybe I would prefer to work on Product in the future!’ I didn’t have any of that experience yet, but I was in meetings with people who were doing that type of role, and I was beginning to admire their position. I went to my people manager and asked for their advice. They were really kind to me and worked with me to find a path that would be a good match.”

Transitioning from one career path to another is not an overnight experience. It takes time and dedication to learn new skills that will make you successful in that role. But with the right support, guidance and motivation, Sarah was able to transition to her current role on our Agile Program Management team.

“I’m still in the early stages. I work directly with the developers and product owners, and in the next year or two, I could be a product owner myself.”

“What’s really cool about my path and Publicis Sapient is that while many people might go to school for project management and stay in that role for their entire career, I’m able to develop the skills on the job to not only project manage but one day, hopefully, lead product development on a project.”

Long-term belonging at PS

“I never saw myself staying at the same company long-term until PS. I have an entrepreneurial mindset—I started my own business years ago as well—and never thought I would find a company that would keep my curious mind engaged. But at PS I feel really good. The consulting structure allows for variety and new challenges, and there is a strong learning mindset among our people.”

“People aren’t saying, ‘You have to choose one thing. You can’t be that curious. Please focus on your own job.’ I feel safe at PS to have ambition.”
