From Intern To Full-time Data Scientist:Three Reasons Nagesh Chooses PS

Meet Nagesh, a Data Scientist on our Engineering & Technology team in Cologne, Germany. Nagesh joined PS as an intern in 2016, when he moved to Germany to start his master’s program. Upon graduation, he joined the PS team full time as a Data Scientist. Learn why he chose PS.

“My job as a Data Scientist is to be the primary catalyst behind digital transformation,” Nagesh said. “Companies are sitting on a treasure trove of data that can only improve how they operate. My job is to apply analysis to this data and produce insights that are not available just by looking at the information. These insights help optimize how companies are delivering their existing solutions while identifying new opportunities.”

It was an easy decision for Nagesh to continue his career with PS after his internship. Here are the three reasons he enjoys being a Data Scientist at PS:

1. Exposure to a wide variety of projects and industries

Before starting as a full-time team member, Nagesh had already been exposed to different projects and verticals within PS during his internship. It was through this exposure that Nagesh found Data Science. As a Data Scientist, Nagesh continues to explore multiple roles within this field through the rotational nature of the work.

“One month I might be working on a machine learning projected related to named entity recognition, and the next month I could be involved in data harmonization or proposing data assessment methods for certain use cases, or I could be involved in building advanced analytics dashboards.”

2. There’s always something new to learn

Training is not an onboarding or occasional activity here. We understand the importance of personal and professional growth, and we have built training and development resources into the ongoing work experience of our teams. The training sessions and certifications are aligned with the development goals and projects that the individual would like to be or is already a part of.

“When I worked on a project related to the energy vertical, I had to work on creating a pipeline in Azure. Once this was complete, I started getting more involved in cloud-related activities, which required me to take some trainings and educate myself on cloud technology. PS provided me with opportunities to complete trainings and get Azure and Google Cloud Platform certifications, which also helped expand my area of work.”

Another way Nagesh has found development opportunities is through the rotational structure of his team.

“During three years of work at PS, I have already gotten the chance to work on projects within four different verticals. I was able to step into multiple roles, including Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Engineer and Data Analyst.”

Nagesh is also finding new things to learn outside of skills and professional development. “Our data team is a great mix of people from different countries and backgrounds. The multicultural team exposes me to many cultures that I might never have experienced otherwise.”

3. Culture is king

The internship experience at PS is focused on bringing students into the fold and giving them the true PS experience. We want each team member to feel like our most valuable asset—because our people are our most valuable asset! This feeling was the biggest motivational factor for Nagesh when he decided to continue his career at PS full time.

“Students are given a lot of responsibility and freedom early on to bring their own interests and learning goals into the company. Every day, there were interesting tasks to tackle, and with transparent communication with my managers, I was able to get involved in projects that interested me.”

“I also feel supported outside of my work experience. During the pandemic, PS provided us with much-needed flexibility and understanding. I was needed back in India during the pandemic, and PS helped me work from there during that time. PS focuses on employee well-being overall, with other benefits like continuing to support flexible work and offering day care support.”
