The Role of Data & Analytics in Digital Business Transformation

Publicis Sapient is building a Data & Analytics team in the Nordics to support the digital business transformation of retail, mobility and transportation organizations. Learn more about the team's leader and what she's looking for.

"There is a stereotypical idea of a data or tech person, and I’m here to change that. It’s not all about numbers and charts and statistics. The translation piece is really important. I’m looking for people who are good at translating the business impact of these facts and figures to somebody who doesn’t speak the language of data."

This ability to translate deep-level technology outputs into business impact and vice versa is the collective thread that Laura can trace throughout her career—along with empathy.

“Empathy and understanding play a big role in the work to help us identify what the actual problem statement is. It’s a common occurrence in our function that people come to us with a question, and when we provide the answer, it provokes another question. This cycle can go on and on. Ten back-and-forths later, we have that ‘a-ha’ moment and discover what was originally at the root of the first question.

“It's a skill to be able to focus on the actual problem from the start. Sometimes the partner we’re working with doesn’t quite know how to ask the question or even what their question is. They just know there’s a problem they need to solve. We make the most impact when we can probe and not only understand what the real question is but why it needs answering.”

Data as the collective tissue for digital business transformation

At PS, our method of delivering digital business transformation to our clients is called SPEED, which stands for our capabilities in Strategy, Product, Experience, Engineering and Data.

“Data is the component that makes the experiences and products we create really fly,” says Laura. “It is what demonstrates that the decisions you’re making and the solutions you’re building are working.

“Engineering is often the shiny thing that gets everyone excited. And don’t get me wrong, it’s crucial. But so is data. Data is the fuel that makes the machinery run.”

“It’s a really great time to be in Data as organizations are recognizing it as an aspect they need to get better at. If you have the talent to understand and deliver on it, you’ll be able to make an impact and stand out.”

The secret to success

Over her 20-year career so far, across multiple industries and functions, Laura’s biggest piece of advice is quite simple—to keep it simple.

“Never underestimate the transformative power of brilliantly done basics. People tend to overcomplicate things. I really enjoy finding simple solutions and getting the basics right.”
