As a rising senior at the University of Michigan studying cognitive science, I’ve spent the past few years exploring how we our brains understand and process language. I am fascinated by the idea of transcribing the algorithms in our brain into algorithms on computers—and that’s what first drew me into the world of neural networks and AI. But here at Publicis Sapient, I was not expecting just how central AI would be to the everyday culture and work. That is just one of several things Publicis Sapient surprised me with this summer. Here are my top 5 takeaways during my summer internship.
1. Embracing AI tools
Coming from a background where analyzing language and writing algorithms are second nature, I considered myself an outlier for not having used ChatGPT prior to my internship. My generation, largely familiar with AI, employs it for tasks ranging from grocery lists, dating advice and educational applications. However, the level of AI integration at Publicis Sapient was surprising. Their philosophy is clear: if AI can code it, don’t do it manually. I have never been encouraged to use AI before, so this encouraged me to challenge myself and dive headfirst into harnessing AI tools, improving my efficiency and speed of completing tasks. It underscored the importance of being AI-literate and using these tools as an extension of our cognitive capabilities to support our work.
2. Authenticity: walking the walk
Company values are often touted but not always actually practiced. PUBLICIS SAPIENT was different. At Publicis Sapient, I observed an alignment between the values and behaviors of their people. Here, authenticity isn’t just a buzzword, it’s how people interact with one another. People encouraged one another to take breaks, respect boundaries and make space for life outside of work. Even more impressive was Publicis Sapient’s commitment to DEI. From cultural celebrations to employee resource groups, the open conversations held every day created a safe and inclusive space for people of all different cultures, backgrounds and sexual orientations. It is clear that DEI is not just an afterthought, but something built into the culture.
3. Flat organization structure
One of the most refreshing aspects of Publicis Sapient was how approachable everyone is—regardless of hierarchal position. The open seating layout of the office encouraged natural conversations and spontaneous connections, and I often found myself sitting next to a senior manager one day and another intern the next. The flat hierarchy at Publicis Sapient also created space for real learning to happen and the culture reinforced it: no egos, just people who want to do great work together. I never felt like I had to “earn” the right to speak or ask questions; in fact, oftentimes I would find myself having a conversation started by a VP. Everyone was willing to share insights, offer support and treat me like a peer.
4. Client impact
Before this summer, I didn’t fully understand the scale and influence of Publicis Sapient’s work. But during PS-Start—our orientation program—I was blown away by all the impressive projects Publicis Sapient has worked on. From helping to create Coca-Cola's first digital soda machines to collaborating with Snoop Dogg, the impressive array of logos associated with Publicis Sapient is a testament to the breadth and depth of their capabilities. After coffee-chatting multiple employees, it became clear that the boundary-pushing accounts that Publicis Sapient works on combine technology, strategy and creativity in ways I hadn’t imagined before. Behind the logos are projects that shape industries and consumer behavior— Publicis Sapient isn’t just part of the conversation; it’s helping lead it.
5. Transparency
Transparency is often promised but rarely delivered at companies. Throughout my experience—from the interview process to the day-to-day internship— Publicis Sapient was strikingly transparent. Everything from potential hours, salary expectations for entry-level positions, possibility of return offers was clearly communicated, and nothing was tip-toed around. There were no “off-limits” questions, and people freely provided clear, candid advice. It was refreshing to be in an environment where curiosity wasn’t met with hesitation, but with openness. This clarity of knowing exactly what to expect eliminated uncertainty, allowing me to focus on my work and growth without having to guess.
My time at Publicis Sapient has challenged and transformed many of my preconceived notions about corporate culture and the use of AI in the workplace. The seamless integration of AI tools, coupled with the company's genuine commitment to its core values, flat organizational structure and transparent practices truly sets Publicis Sapient apart. I came in expecting to learn about the intersection of technology and consulting, and I’m leaving with an understanding about what it means to build innovative tools in an inclusive, human-centered culture.
If you’re curious about what it’s like to work at Publicis Sapient, I encourage you to explore it for yourself. Who knows? You might be surprised, just like I was.
