What does it really look like to grow a career at the intersection of technology, business, and energy? For one of our Manager Technology leaders, Dattanand Vernekar, it starts with thinking of every day as solving a massive, ever-changing puzzle. “I lead a team of around 15 people working on ETRM software. My role is to make sure everyone has what they need to succeed. Whether that’s unblocking issues, translating business needs into technical solutions, or making sure the right conversations are happening at the right time.”At its core, the role is about connection. Acting as the bridge between business challenges and technical solutions, the work is as much about listening as it is about building.
Given how challenging the ETRM space can be, what drew Vernekar to this space? “Energy markets don’t stand still and neither does the work. The blend of technology and business is what drew me in. No two projects are the same. Regulations shift, markets evolve, and every client brings a new challenge.” But beyond the complexity, it’s the people that make the difference. “I love being someone others can rely on, whether it’s helping a teammate solve a problem or navigating tough client conversations. That trust keeps me motivated every day.”
Venekar started as a developer and grew into a senior, client-facing leader. But that didn’t happen overnight.“It came from staying open to learning, taking on challenges, and pushing through the tough moments.” And those tough moments? They turned into the biggest lessons, especially when it came to handling high-pressure situations with stakeholders. “Learning to lead with transparency, empathy, and data changed everything. Those experiences built the resilience I rely on today.” In ETRM, the work goes far beyond code. “When our solutions work seamlessly, energy companies can make faster decisions, reduce errors, and manage risk more effectively. That’s a responsibility I take seriously.” Over time, that impact builds trust, the kind where clients don’t just work with you, they rely on you.
At Publicis Sapient, growth is both supported and expected. “This environment gave me the space to grow at my own pace while constantly pushing me forward. The exposure to complex projects accelerated my learning in ways I couldn’t have planned.” And it’s not just about the work, it’s about the people around you. “You’re encouraged to ask questions, challenge ideas, and bring your own perspective. That sense of ownership makes the work more meaningful.” So what does the future of ETRM look like in the new age of AI? Well, it’s being shaped right now. “From predictive pricing to automating compliance, AI has the potential to transform how energy trading works. Being part of that evolution is incredibly exciting.”
