Why Energy & Commodities Is a Hot Industry for Engineers

Discover advice on starting a career in energy & commodities trading from a Publicis Sapient software engineer.

The energy and commodity space is at an inflection point as technology and climate consciousness drive companies to prioritize a sustainable future and non-renewable energy sources. It’s dynamic and booming, with new trends and opportunities opening every day.

For anyone interested in building their career in this space at Publicis Sapient, software developer Ankit Jain, has some advice on how to gain an edge.

Focus on Java

“While we work on multiple tools in this domain, most of the applications are built on Java. If you are a Java developer with experience in SQL, you have an edge in understanding the various solutions such as ‘Endur’ we use in this domain. Once you start understanding the tools and gain functional knowledge by reading and practicing, there is nothing stopping you!”

Ankit should know as he’s spent the last 7+ years working across five different and extremely complex commodity domains (including oil, gas, power emission, and LNG) at Publicis Sapient and is now working as a track lead in our Energy & Commodities Trading Risk Management (ETRM) domain. It’s a new evolution track for oil commodities for one of our clients, and Ankit will help build performance-enhancement features.

Find where you belong

Ankit’s journey with Publicis Sapient started before joining our team.

While working at an IT services organization, he took notice of the confidence, communication, depth of knowledge and composure in the people he worked with. They all had something else in common—they had previously spent time on our teams!

“When you find qualities that you appreciate and want to emulate, take note and look for opportunities to further immerse yourself. I look back on my time at Publicis Sapient so far with gratitude and pride. I have learned a lot about technical and functional aspects, but I’ve also learned the art of handling different and difficult situations and facing challenges with confidence.”

This training started from day one. “A project director early in my career at Publicis Sapient demonstrated the value of my personal growth. He was equally invested in the project and helping me grow and learn.”
